Anthropic Unifies Claude With Docs and Slides as It Challenges Google Gemini’s Productivity Lead

Anthropic is adding Docs and Slides to Claude, turning conversations into editable documents and presentations that users can export, revise, and share. The launch gives Claude a direct answer to Google Gemini’s productivity features, which already connect closely with Docs, Slides, Gmail, and other Workspace applications. The Verge AI first described the new tools as Claude’s version of Google’s office software.

The release also folds Cowork into the main Claude experience. Users no longer choose between separate chat and Cowork surfaces when asking Claude to research, draft, organize files, or produce a finished artifact. Anthropic’s training material says Claude can work directly with files, folders, and apps, transforming a conversation into a multi-step working session.

Claude’s new interface brings chat, Cowork, Artifacts, and Claude Design into one window. TechCrunch AI reported that Claude Design, introduced for websites and prototypes, now works throughout the unified Claude environment. The result is a single place for generating written work, interactive outputs, designs, and presentations.

Cowork provides the operational layer behind that interface. It can read and edit files, organize folders, conduct research, and produce outputs, while users steer the task through ordinary conversation. DataCamp’s account traces Cowork from a macOS research preview in January 2026 to broader availability across paid plans on macOS and Windows. Anthropic’s course materials emphasize planning, execution, plugins, skills, and user direction across longer workflows.

Claude’s Docs and Slides launch targets Google Gemini’s strongest advantage: native access to productivity software. Gemini can create Docs, Sheets, and Slides inline and operates inside Google’s broader Workspace environment, according to The Signal. Claude’s approach starts with the assistant and extends outward through generated files, exports, connected applications, and team workflows.

The competition is therefore about more than document quality. Gemini retains a natural fit for organizations already centered on Gmail and Google Drive, while Claude is positioning itself as a flexible work agent for writing, research, coding, design, and file-based tasks. Comparisons from Emergent and Tactiq frame Claude as stronger for careful writing and complex work, with Gemini favored for speed, large multimodal inputs, and Google integration. Those differences will shape which platform becomes the default starting point for office work.

The unified Claude experience is rolling out first to Pro and Max subscribers, with additional plans scheduled to follow. Anthropic’s Skilljar documentation confirms the transition from Cowork to “just Claude,” while TechCrunch AI identifies the initial subscriber focus.

Anthropic is also extending Claude into team communication. Claude Tag lets organizations add Claude to selected Slack channels, connect approved tools, data, and codebases, and invoke the assistant by tagging @Claude. Claude builds context from the channels it can access, according to Anthropic’s announcement. Claude’s expansion into files, apps, shared channels, and codebases increases the value of the product and the consequences of mistakes. That safety work matters as Claude shifts from answering questions to taking actions. A system that edits a presentation has a narrower blast radius than one that changes a shared codebase or acts inside a company Slack workspace. Anthropic’s containment discussion places access control, tool selection, and damage limits at the center of agent deployment. For enterprise buyers, the product decision will involve governance as much as writing quality or presentation design.

Claude’s next test is whether generated files become repeatable work products rather than attractive one-off demos. Users will judge Docs and Slides by editing control, formatting consistency, export quality, collaboration, and the accuracy of information carried from research into the final output.

Google starts with a distribution advantage through Workspace, while Anthropic is betting that a unified agent can span documents, designs, files, code, and team channels. The early rollout to paid users gives Anthropic room to refine the workflow before wider access. Competition between Claude and Gemini is moving from chatbot answers toward ownership of the work session itself, with the winning product defined by how reliably it turns an instruction into something a team can use.
