GM Puts Gemini in 4 Million Cars, Turning Every Dashboard Into an AI Co-Pilot

General Motors will push Google Gemini to roughly 4 million vehicles across the United States, the automaker confirmed. The list covers every 2022 and newer Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac that already ships with Google built-in infotainment (Android Automotive). Owners will get an on-screen prompt when their turn arrives; the phased deployment starts later this year and will stretch over several months. There is no additional hardware required and, according to GM’s own press materials, no fee for the update itself.

Instead of the current Google Assistant, the dash will speak with Gemini. Google says the switch brings more natural conversation, deeper context memory and the ability to juggle multi-step tasks. Examples floated by both companies include asking the car to draft a reply to a text, queue a playlist that matches the mood of the last song, or surface a hotel address buried in Gmail. GM’s own marketing leans on the idea that Gemini can tap service manuals and vehicle-specific data, so a driver could ask “why is that light blinking?” and get an answer that cites the owner’s handbook.

Shipping Gemini to four million real dashboards is one of the largest single deployments of a large language model outside phones and browsers. It gives Google a captive audience that spends hours a day in a space where OpenAI, Amazon and Apple have little presence. For GM, the move buys time: insiders told the Detroit Free Press that the automaker is still working on its own in-house assistant and sees Google as a stopgap. Still, once drivers grow used to Gemini, switching them again may be harder than GM expects.

The update cannot be retro-fitted to older cars that lack Google built-in. That means vehicles that still run GM’s legacy infotainment or CarPlay/Android Auto phone projection are out of luck. Owners also need an active data plan or Wi-Fi connection for the cloud-based model to function. Google confirmed that the car’s own processors handle wake-word detection and audio, but the heavy lifting happens in Google’s data centers, so rural dead zones will still break the spell.

Google and GM have not published a detailed privacy white paper yet. Based on existing Google built-in agreements, voice queries are processed in the cloud and tied to the user’s Google account. That allows Gemini to reach into Gmail, Calendar and Maps, but it also means Google keeps transcripts for product improvement unless drivers opt out. Fleet or commercial customers may face extra headaches because each vehicle will be tied to an individual Google account rather than a corporate admin console.

Expect Volvo, Renault and Polestar to follow within months. All three already ship Google built-in and have publicly confirmed upcoming Gemini upgrades. Ford, Stellantis and Toyota, which rely on a mix of in-house and third-party stacks, will face pressure to match the feature parity or risk looking dated. For developers, Google says an SDK will arrive so third-party Android Automotive apps can tap Gemini for voice commands, potentially opening the door to smarter parking, charging and food-ordering experiences.
