Suspect Named and Charged with Attempted Assassination After Trump Evacuated from WHCD Shooting

President Donald Trump and top officials were safely evacuated Saturday night after gunfire rang out near the Washington hotel hosting the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Secret Service agents hustled the president, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior staff to secure locations within minutes of the first shots.

Law enforcement sources tell CBS 2 Iowa that five to eight rapid-fire shots were heard outside the ballroom. Security footage reviewed by KCRA shows a brief gun battle between officers and the suspect at the hotel entrance. An officer's life was saved when a bullet struck his ballistic vest.

The alleged gunman has been identified as Michael Ray Hobbs, 42, of Alexandria, Virginia. Hobbs was formally charged Sunday with attempted assassination of the president, possession of an unregistered firearm, and assault on a federal officer.

Neighbors describe Hobbs as quiet, polite, and academically gifted. "He helped me with my calculus homework last semester," said 19-year-old Lily Chen, who lives in the same apartment complex. Another neighbor, retired Marine James Booker, called Hobbs "the kind of guy who'd fix your Wi-Fi router at 10 p.m. without being asked."

Federal agents recovered a 9 mm Glock pistol, two additional loaded magazines, and three knives from Hobbs' backpack. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed the firearm was purchased legally in Virginia three months ago.

This marks the third potential assassination attempt on Trump in under two years. The Secret Service's evacuation protocols worked flawlessly, but the fact Hobbs got within 50 yards of the ballroom has triggered an internal review.

Security consultant and former Secret Service agent Jonathan Wackrow calls it "a catastrophic lapse. The perimeter should've been locked down two blocks out." Law-enforcement officials tell The Guardian that additional plainclothes teams will now shadow major political events in D.C.
