Mac Mini Vanishes as AI Rush Collides With RAM Shortage

The $599 M4 Mac Mini is completely unavailable on Apple's US store, and CEO Tim Cook told analysts it will stay that way for "several months." What started as tight supply for high-RAM configurations has spread to every model, including the base 16GB version that vanished from Apple's site in late April.

Cook admitted Apple was caught off-guard by how quickly AI adoption accelerated. The Mini's sudden scarcity isn't just another holiday-season sellout, it's a structural shift in who wants Apple's smallest desktop and why they want it.

Developers figured out the Mac Mini hits a sweet spot for running AI agents at home. Unlike cloud services, a Mini can keep OpenClaw and similar tools running 24/7 without racking up usage bills. The compact form factor means users can tuck multiple units into a closet for distributed AI workloads.

This use case exploded faster than Apple's supply chain could adapt. According to The Times of India, the same phenomenon drove second-hand MacBook prices through the roof in China as users scrambled for any Apple silicon with enough RAM to run local models.

Behind the demand spike, a global DRAM shortage is strangling production. TrendForce data shows conventional DRAM prices jumped 60% quarter-over-quarter, and analysts warn the squeeze could last into 2027. High-capacity configurations, 32GB or 64GB for Mac Mini, up to 256GB for Mac Studio, disappeared from Apple's store first.

Apple's not immune to broader semiconductor chaos. Even with $162 billion in cash, the company can't magic up RAM chips that don't exist. The shortage affects the entire consumer electronics pipeline, but AI workloads are amplifying demand for higher memory configurations that were already scarce.

Creative professionals who planned Mac Mini deployments for video workflows are stuck. Independent developers who bet their AI startups on local Mini clusters face months-long delays. Enterprise buyers who saw the Mini as a cost-effective way to experiment with on-prem AI now need expensive Mac Studio backups.

The timing is brutal for Apple. Mac revenue beat Wall Street's $8 billion estimate, driven partly by this AI demand, but the company can't capitalize because supply is capped. Every week of shortages pushes more potential buyers toward building DIY Linux boxes or renting cloud GPUs instead.

When production catches up, Apple faces a strategic question: lean into the AI positioning or sand it down to avoid cannibalizing Mac Studio sales. The Mini's new identity as an AI workhorse could justify higher pricing or specialized configurations, think 128GB RAM options that don't exist today.

More importantly, this shortage signals where consumer AI is heading. Local inference on personal hardware isn't a niche use case anymore. It's driving supply chain decisions at the world's most valuable company. The next Mini refresh, likely M5-based, will probably ship with configurations specifically designed for AI workloads.
