Google Assistant dies September 4: Gemini becomes the only AI on your Android phone

Google has locked in September 4 as the date it will begin removing Google Assistant from Android phones and tablets. The company started emailing users directly in early August to confirm the timeline, according to reports from Ars Technica and The Verge. The phase-out won't happen to every device at once. Google told users the process will take place over several weeks, after which there will be no option to switch back.

Android Authority obtained copies of the email where Google explicitly states that Assistant will start disappearing on that date, with eligible devices prompting users to adopt Gemini. Ars Technica notes the original plan was to retire Assistant in late 2025, but Google gave the service a brief reprieve while it shored up Gemini's capabilities. That extra time is now over, and the transition is mandatory.

Mobile devices are the primary targets, but the shutdown reaches further. The Verge reports that paired devices like smartwatches and headphones connected to Android phones will also lose Assistant functionality. Google Assistant has powered voice commands, smart home controls, reminders, and search queries across the Android ecosystem since 2016, and all of that is being dismantled.

Android Police raised a separate concern about smart speakers and smart displays. Google has not clarified what happens to Nest speakers and smart displays when Assistant disappears from phones. These devices still run the old Google Assistant firmware and have received no clear migration path to Gemini. Google has said that smart home devices will eventually transition, but no timeline has been announced.

This creates a split ecosystem. Your phone will run Gemini while your kitchen speaker still answers to the old Assistant, at least temporarily. How long that split lasts is unknown. Google's silence on the matter suggests the smart home transition is technically more complex and likely further out than the mobile shutdown.

Users who receive the email will see their phones automatically switch from Google Assistant to Gemini. The rollout is staggered, but Google has made it clear there is no opt-out.
