OpenAI's AGI deployment chief takes medical leave as leadership reshuffle deepens

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of AGI deployment, is taking medical leave for "several weeks" to address a neuroimmune condition, according to an internal memo obtained by The Verge. Simo had previously served as CEO of Applications before the role was recast as head of AGI deployment. She joins two other top executives on leave: Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch is stepping away for cancer treatment, while COO Brad Lightcap is shifting to a "special projects" role.

This marks OpenAI's second major executive shakeup in under a year. Simo joined the company in May 2025 from Instacart, where she'd been CEO since 2021. Her appointment was positioned as freeing up Sam Altman to focus on AGI research, compute infrastructure, and safety. Now, with Simo on leave, OpenAI president Greg Brockman will take over product responsibilities across the company.

Bloomberg reports the company is eyeing a Wall Street debut potentially as soon as this year, making stability in the C-suite particularly important.
